Top 1000 Games on Steam: 71% Working on the Steam Deck in August 2024

By

Hi Everyone! If you were wondering about the current state of the video games compatibility on the Steam Deck, we can give you a pretty good answer today. We have done this kind of assessment before, back in January 2024.

Now more than 6 months have passed and we can do some comparison versus the last datapoint as well.

Top 1000 Games and Steam Deck in August 2024

The latest data refreshed on the 6th of August 2024 gives us the following stats:

  • Steam Deck Verified Games: 250 (25.0 %)
  • Steam Deck Playable Games: 460 (46.0 %)
  • Steam Deck Unsupported Games: 198 (19.8 %)
  • Rating TBC: 92 (9.2 %)

Which means we get to 71% of titles being either rated as Playable or Verified for the Steam Deck. Of course, the top 1000 games is always changing, so the mix of games you get is always going to evolve from one month to the next. Still, it looks like we have lost a little ground compared the earlier in the year.

Rating January 2024 August 2024 Change
Verified 26.6 25.0 -1.6
Playable 46.9 46.0 -0.9
Unsupported 21.0 19.8 -1.2
Unknown 5.5 9.2 +3.7

First change that matters is the fact that there are more titles that are yet to be tested. This could be linked to the fact that there is a large backlog of games to test and the current process cannot keep up as fast as the top 1000 list changes.

Since the Unknown category causes some variation, let’s look at the actual percentages without the Unknown category:

Rating January 2024 August 2024 Change
Verified 28.1 27.5 -0.6
Playable 49.6 50.6 +1.0
Unsupported 22.2 21.8 -0.4

As you can see the actual percentages are fairly stable once you remove the unknown category. But this also means one thing: there hasn’t been much progress in further tackling compatibility over time. One of the recent examples if the openworld multiplayer survival game called Once Human that is currently marked as Unsupported on the Deck.

Same thing for the First Descendant multiplayer looter shooter released in June 2024.

On the other hand, there are not many titles from 2024 that have received a Verified status on the higher part of the Top 1000 games on Steam, but here’s what makes it to the top currently with a Verified or Playable status:

Here’s one of them, the popular Deep Rock Galactic Survivor:

Getting to 80% seems to be difficult right now, and there are entrenched developers or publishers that refuse to consider the Steam Deck for compatibility (especially multiplayer games). Still, there is no lack of games to play, and the fact that the percentage is stable is reassuring: this means that newer games still get tested, and most of them are following the same profile as what we have seen until now.

By the time the Steam Deck 2 releases, the portable gaming PC market may become a little bigger and warrant more support from publishers. But it’s hard to say how long this kind of things will take.
