New Games You Can Play With Proton Since March 2020

Here we go with the list of games that have never seen any report until March 2020… usually this means new games that recently saw a release on Steam. Note than compared to previous editions, I am now including a direct link to the ProtonDB page for each game, so that you can go and check the latest status for yourself.

Note: Gold+ indicates how many ratings where Gold or Platinum for that game (since the new rating system does ask for such ratings anymore, these are now calculated based on different parameters entered by the end users).

Although the number of “Good” ratings were rather low for **Doom Eternal **in March, it’s possible to run the game on Linux - it requires several tricks, and there are still some issues with the game for now, but it runs. And quite well, according to this benchmark vs Windows10:

**Borderlands 3 **works for the most part but there were some performance issues, graphical artifacts and stability problems apparently. This may have become a little better recently.

The new **Ori **game works, but suffers from pretty bad performance so far. You will probably want to wait a little to enjoy that one on Linux:

The new VR sensation, Half Life: Alyx, works on Linux but the performance is so far from what you would expect to be a good VR experience that it’s not worth it for now. Also, it’s not super stable either, according to reports.

If you like retro gaming, Doom 64, the PC remake of the old Nintendo 64 game, may be a good pick for you. It does not work well out of the box because of mouse control issues, but they can be fixed:

GranBlue Fantasy is well known in Japan, while I am not sure how popular it is in Europe and in the US. It seems like the game works well on Linux out of the box, while I could not find any video so far. (review on Windows below)

Resident Evil is back with Resident Evil 3, and so far the demo seems to work relatively OK on Linux, but reports have been a little inconsistent. (apparently works better on Proton 4 than 5?).

What else do we have? Oh, Exit the Gungeon works out of the box and looks like a pretty fun game (platformer + shoot’em up). Not a Linux video below, but if it works as expected should be identical.

Let’s finish on a special mention: a game that I did not even know existed before writing this report: Record of Lodoss War - Deedlit in Wonder Labyrinth. This is based on the infamous Lodoss War series (manga+anime) from the 90s (the first season is worth watching, not the second one…) - probably one of the best examples of medieval fantasy from Japan (if you like comedy you’d prefer Slayers though). What is amusing about this new game is that it looks like a clone of Castlevania Symphony of the Night, the best Castlevania game ever made. Now that piqued my interest, I will have to check it out a lot more:
