The Talos Principle, Coming December 11th
CroTeam is back with a new title that was previously announced a while ago, the Talos Principle. This is going to be a philosophical first-person puzzle game, a genre quite different than what CroTeam used to produce. After all, they are well known for their Serious Sam series, which is probably one of the most brainless shooters ever created (yet fun!). It’s coming to Linux and other platforms on December 11th (Linux first class citizen again!), so in a little more than one month from now.
It will use the Serious Engine 4 technology, the next advancement in the engine behind the Serious Sam series, and a “new proprietary method to scan real world locations and historical elements into the game world”, from what I could gather. The Serious Engine is not bad, and you can judge by yourself from the screenshots that it’s definitely going to look decent.
So, it’s a puzzle game. But where is the philosophical part of it ? Well, you will soon notice when you access terminals in the level that your hands are robotic and you may not be playing a human character… and the conversation to be had on the console screen revolve around existential questions.
The game is written by Tom Jubert (FTL, The Swapper) and Jonas Kyratzes (Infinite Ocean), which seem to indicate we have capable writers behind the game’s story and world. Note that Rock,Paper,Shotgun had a preview of the game online a couple of days ago, and they liked what they could try so far.
Who knows, The Talos Principle could be an unexpected good surprise, on top of the other games we expect to hit the Linux platform in Winter 2014.
