TGS 2026: Persona 4 Revival

By

It’s 2026, you are one of the biggest Japanese publishers, and you just realized that in a few months down the road there’s the TGS 2026, and you don’t have no plans for it. I mean, you have a couple of news, but nothing worth filling a huge booth that we usually go for. Never mind that!

Sega didn’t have a lot this year. It was fairly obvious and their only real new title was Stranger than Heaven which is some kind of spinoff from the Yakuza (Like a Dragon) franchise. It was too early for Persona 6, and the only thing they could do is to throw a P6 teaser with nothing in it back in June 2026 ahead of the show. There’s Crazy Taxi World Tour but it was so low key that they had to put it on the side. Don’t get me wrong, this multiplayer Crazy Taxi has a good chance of being a fun game, but nobody came to TGS to see that.

The Age of Remakes

So they had to play the remake card, with Persona 4 (after Persona 3 ReLoad). Guys, i don’t know about you, but it looks like they are running out of things to remake! They have the first two Personas if they really want to, but those are not games of the same caliber. With Persona 4, you have some more potential. It’s a very, very famous game, that was released on Playstation 2 in 2008 (I remember it well, in Japan it was hugely popular at that time), and made it to other formats afterwards with the Golden edition (with its excellent new intro song).

So Persona 4 Revival is a second facelift, this time more drastic, very similar to what they did with Persona 3 ReLoad. You get a massive graphical overhaul, but it seems to remain faithful to the base game, while they introduced quite a few changes in the combat system:

  • Shift System (Baton Pass): Revival replaces simple turn-passing with a smooth, modern mechanic akin to Persona 5 Royal and Persona 3 Reload, allowing players to chain additional turns dynamically between party members.
  • Shift/Direct Commands: Party controls and skill execution are updated with streamlined UI shortcuts rather than navigating purely through vertical command lists.
  • Overhauled Boss Mechanics: Major boss encounters in the TV World are redesigned with brand-new phases, updated enemy AI, and unique visual transformations for their Shadows.

For the dungeon exploration, the view has completely changed:

  • Over-the-Shoulder 3D Camera: While Golden used a semi-fixed top-down/isometric angle, Revival features full 360° camera control in both dungeons and real-world town exploration.
  • Dungeon Level Design: Dungeons in Revival feature fully realized 3D environments, unique interactive puzzles, destructible objects, and navigational mechanics to break up the hallway-heavy procedural floor design of Golden. I hope this means less grind…
  • Stealth & Ambush Mechanics: Shadow encounters outside battle are updated so players can stalk, dash, and initiate ambushes rather than hitting enemies with basic melee swings.

Persona 4 would be nothing without its life simulation aspects and here too you can expect an upgraded approach:

  • Seamless Town Movement: Inaba (the town where P4 takes place) is rendered as a contiguous, fully playable 3D space rather than locked behind static loading transitions.
  • Better Integrated Social Content: Story additions from Golden (like Marie’s narrative arc) are reworked directly into the main story pacing rather than feeling isolated or added on top.
  • Expanded Evening Options: Revival adds new night-time activities around Inaba, allowing more choices to raise social stats or spend time with friends when dungeon diving isn’t an option.

All of this is provided with an upgraded engine (probably the same one used for P3 Reload and P5?) with reworked 3d models for everything, replacing all older assets. Now, I’m not sure this is all going to be positive. You get Yukiko who got the Michael Jackson treatment and lost her nose in the process:

Remember, cosmetic surgery is not alwasy safe! I hope the mod community can help with that!

The music and voice acting was not kept as is, they went for another singer (who seems to do a good job as well), and they also recorded a few new songs and remixed/recreated the original background music. There are going to be subtle and more significant changes there, so I’m still wary whether this is going to be a good thing or not. You can see a few songs with the new performer in their new dance number they where showcasing at the TGS:

Solid stuff so far, at least. Cautiously optimistic for the rest of the soundtrack.

Hands-on

I had the chance to try out Persona 4 hands-on, and of course this is probably the worst place to try the game. Noisy, only 10~15 mins, but it felt very similar to how modern Personas are designed and how they work. Definitely a different experience from Persona 4 Golden, but could be a very good way for new generations not familiar with this landmark episode to discover it again. I just hope they kept it in its era and avoided making it too 2026 for the remake’s sake. Japan in 2010 and 2026 is quite a different place.

It’s coming out in early 2027 and I am fairly confident we will see more about Persona 6 at the TGS 2027 edition. They have to!

Bonus Wallpaper

Here’s a wallpaper I made for you guys, based on a sign I captured at the event for the 30th anniversary of the Persona franchise.

Enjoy the wait! If you don’t want to wait for the remake, Persona 4 Golden is still an excellent game, if you have 100 hours in front of you and don’t mind the grind.
