TGS 2026: A White Steam Controller Exists Now. You Just Can't Buy It.

I wandered into the eXtremeRate booth at the recent Tokyo Games Show 2026 expecting the usual: more remap kits, more back paddles for controllers I already own too many of. But my eyes caught something on the wall: a Steam Controller with an all-white shell on it, and honestly? My first thought was “Wait, Valve made white?”

They didn’t. eXtremeRate did it themselves. And here’s the part that matters: this isn’t a faceplate sticker or some kind of half-assed cosmetic crap. It’s a complete replacement shell.

Every single outer panel of the Steam Controller swapped out in one go. Same trick they’ve been pulling on the Steam Deck for years with their full-set shells, where you replace front plate, back plate and buttons as a whole kit instead of hoping your old plastic never ages or cracks.

And to be honest, even though my Steam Deck always rests firmly into its case when I am not using it, it’s developed some micro-cracks and some rashes here and there, so sooner or later I may have to swap its shell if I really care about its looks. I’m guessing the same will probably happen with the Steam Controller sooner or later.

In practice: it’s just better than stock

The default Steam Controller shell is fine in that Valve-grey industrial way. It’s standard, it has no strong personality, just neutral, whether you like it or not. The thing I don’t really like is that the plastic feels cheap. Like, nothing you’d expect from that price point. The white kit fixes exactly that problem: you get a really smooth, neat plastic shell that feels premium.

Just a better skin for the same innards. There’s a very big trend in PC gaming about having white cases, white motherboards, white GPUs, and Valve itself has been leading the white design in its games with Portal for many years now. It’s just weird that they don’t do some more effort to cater to the very style they helped create. They did a special White Steam Deck in limited supply a white ago, but I don’t think it would hurt to have black and white options for everything they do. They can even price them higher (that’s what manufacturers do: white GPUs cost consistently more).

Not for sale yet (ouch!)

I was ready to get my credit card out and order it after testing it on the booth, but the staff had sad news for me. No price, no launch date, nothing beyond “it exists”.

eXtremeRate has been tight-lipped about the Steam Controller line since fans started asking. Their current store is all Steam Deck, PS5 and Switch 2 kits. So right now this white shell is like a teaser: a preview of something to come, maybe just thrown out there to gauge the interest of the crowd.

Well, color me interested.
