POLL: Kindle Ownership and Alternatives
Very recently the Amazon Kindle was back in the news for two reasons:
- First, Amazon has announced that they will now prevent end users from downloading their own ebooks via USB, on the pretext that this was used for piracy or something. Piracy meaning, you know, removing the fucking DRM off the books you actually bought a license for.
- A few days later, there was the release of a universal jailbreak solution, WinterBreak which is a revolution in itself as most recent Kindles were not easy to jailbreak for the past couple of years. With this, you can now install good stuff like KOREADER, the best ebook reader you can have on such a device (it gives you way more options and makes it easy to connect to a Calibre instance).
So in this context, we asked our followers if they had a Kindle, or something else. Since our community is mostly composed of Linux users, you can assume that it’s not representative of the mainstream Kindle audience.
Interestingly, there’s a sizable amount of our followers who do not use ebook readers. They probably prefer actual books, which are also great and superior to ebooks in almost every way (they can be lent, resold, and used to power a fireplace when you don’t need them anymore) while they do take a bit of space. As for me, I love physical books, but I am getting at a stage where I just lack the storage space, and I resort to ebooks to keep it manageable.
If you are looking for something else than the Kindle, I can heartily recommend a Kobo device instead - it also uses Linux, but is far more open that its Amazon equivalent and there’s no need to jailbreak anything to install KOREADER.
