GamerOS Has Been Renamed to ChimeraOS

By

After major backlash from the community, the developers behind GamerOS – the enhanced SteamOS alternative – have decided to give the project a new name. It’s now called ChimeraOS. As someone who’s never heard the name “Chimera,” I had to look up what it meant. This is the definition according to the Merriam-Webster dictionary:

1a capitalized : a fire-breathing she-monster in Greek mythology having a lion’s head, a goat’s body, and a serpent’s tail
b : an imaginary monster compounded of incongruous parts
2 : an illusion or fabrication of the mind especially : an unrealizable dream a fancy […]
3 : an individual, organ, or part consisting of tissues of diverse genetic constitution […]

Now the new logo makes sense to me (yup, they got a new logo). In addition to the name and logo change, they also have a completely redesigned website:

To top it all off, the distribution itself has received an update. Release 25 brings:

  • the usual kernel and graphics driver upgrades
  • steamos-compositor-plus and steam-buddy updates
  • installer now has Wi-Fi support – this is a big one as it was one of my complaints with my review a while back
  • MangoHUD config support
  • racing wheel support
  • a few more games can be installed via Steam Buddy: Mr. Rescue, Cave Story NX, and Sonic 3: AIR
  • Additional revisions of Proton GE added
  • various bug fixes and improved reliability

If you have a dedicated box lying around, I highly recommend giving ChimeraOS a try. Check out our review from last year, and get a behind-the-scenes look at the creation of ChimeraOS with our dev Q&A.
